Screenshot-Driven Design

Screenshot-driven design is the practice of starting every design task from a captured image of a real product. You grab a screenshot of something that already ships well, drop it into Claude or Cursor, and let the model name the hierarchy, pull the tokens, and spit out a first cut. The screenshot acts as spec, brief, and prompt simultaneously. This exists because AI vision matured in 2025 and cheap capture tools turned reference gathering into a reflex. The old loop of sketch then wireframe then hi-fi died. The new loop is capture, caption, prompt, iterate, ship.

Speed of intent won. A wireframe communicates low fidelity structure at slow speed. A moodboard sells vibe but hides structure. The volume of cycles beats perfect taste every time. Avoid it during pure brand identity creation or when inventing entirely new interaction paradigms from zero. Those situations demand distance from existing solutions the workflow does not naturally provide. The tradeoff is raw velocity against the discipline required to stop your taste from atrophying.

Teams that treat the four steps as optional fail fast. No captioning means no search. No classification means no trust. No recombination means you ship derivatives with different brand colors. Do the work or stay in the old loop.

The screenshot is the new sketchbook. Your judgment about what to combine and when the model is wrong remains the only moat.
