Infinite Empty

The infinite empty is the wide open prompt surface that defines the first experience of nearly every AI product since 2022. It consists of one large text input waiting for the user to articulate their need with no examples no templates no sample outputs and no indication of what the model does best. The result is blank prompt syndrome. The user faces unlimited possibility and freezes. They either leave immediately or type something trivial that produces a trivial response. Either way the product fails to activate them. This state is a special case of the first-run empty combined with search-empty. It appears at signup and after every completed task. It is the screen that carries more weight than your marketing site because it is where the promise meets the reality of a blinking cursor. Most teams treat it as an afterthought because the backend model is the hard part. They are wrong. The empty state is the product for the first 60 seconds and in AI tools those 60 seconds decide retention. The naive version is a giant field with the words Ask me anything. The user types hi. The model replies with something generic. The user concludes the tool is mid and deletes it. This pattern repeats in ChatGPT Claude Cursor image generators and every wrapper rushed out in 2023. It is not ambiguity. It is a specific design failure with measurable dropoff at the activation moment.

What it is not is a standard empty state that can be solved with a sad illustration or a generic get started button. It is not the zero state in a fresh Linear project that can use calm copy and suggested issues. It is not the post-clear state that celebrates inbox zero with dry humor like Linear does. It is not the error empty that should name the failed integration and offer a fix. It is not the search empty that GitHub turns into a create action by pre filling an issue title. Those have context the user brings with them. The infinite empty has no context because the product can do anything from writing poetry to debugging kernels to planning a wedding. Without rails the user supplies their own context and most cannot. It is not minimalism done right like Figma showing example drafts or Cron overlaying keyboard shortcuts on sample events. It is minimalism done lazy. The article calls it the infinite blank and it is the failure mode that shames every AI designer who ships it instead of teaching with concrete moves.

Concrete example is everywhere in the AI boom. ChatGPT launched November 30 2022 with a centered prompt box and a few static suggestions that felt random to non power users. Millions typed safe starters like tell me a joke and received generic replies that set low expectations for the entire session. Claude launched by Anthropic in March 2023 with a clean interface that hid its edge in careful reasoning and long context behind the same blank field. Early testers bounced before discovering its strengths. Cursor in its first months of 2023 presented developers with an empty sidebar chat that caused them to close the tab before pasting their first file because they could not decide between small refactors and full app builds. Midjourney in its early Discord implementation in 2022 forced users to learn prompt crafting through pure trial and error because the interface offered no starters style references or parameter examples. DALL-E 2 in 2022 repeated the mistake until later versions added variation previews. Contrast these with successes. Granola in 2024 offers a record a test meeting button that instantly shows a formatted transcript with highlighted decisions action items and speaker names so the user sees quality output before sharing real meetings. Replit loads every new AI workspace with a functional example file that runs and prints output immediately so the user experiences the loop in under 10 seconds instead of staring at a blank editor. Stripe showed the power of sample data in 2016 with its test dashboard that let users explore a populated interface before switching to real empty data and the pattern still applies perfectly to AI. Notion AI in 2023 added contextual prompts based on page type so a blank meeting notes page suggests different starters than a blank product spec. Superhuman used sample emails during onboarding to teach keyboard shortcuts even before AI was central. Gamma for presentations in 2024 preloads five example slide deck types with one click creation. These products turn the infinite empty into a directed first step and their retention numbers show it. The difference is not better models. The difference is deliberate empty state design.

When to use the infinite empty is only as a diagnostic label during your team audit. Gather design PM and engineering. Open every AI screen in a fresh incognito session. Screenshot the prompt boxes. Label each infinite empty if it lacks three targeted suggestions one sample output and clear tone copy. Then spend 30 minutes rewriting the surface with concrete prompt cards sample generations that users can fork and eight word expectation setters. Do this every month because AI interfaces evolve fast and new models introduce new edge cases. When not to use it is when shipping to real users without those fixes. Do not ship the bare box if your product is not ChatGPT with millions of curious users in 2022. Do not use it in B2B tools where the buyer expects immediate ROI on their first prompt. Do not default to it because it looks sleek in a pitch deck or wins points for restraint. The fix is always the same. Provide the first half of the sentence. Show three prompts that demonstrate casual professional and expert use cases. Include a sample conversation the user can continue with one click. Add a one click template for the most common task in your domain. Celebrate the first successful output like a post-clear state to build momentum. Link to a prompt library or help article that teaches without leaving the flow. Do all four moves or at least three and your activation rate will improve measurably within the week. The empty state is your product. In AI the prompt surface is the only product for the first three interactions. Treat it that way or watch users treat your app like every other forgotten experiment.

The infinite empty turns infinite possibility into immediate exit so hand users the first half of the sentence or they will never write the second.
