Command Bar

A command bar is the centered input you summon with cmd-K that understands your product's specific nouns and verbs then executes actions without ever showing you a menu. It exists because sidebars grew too expensive once monitors filled with dense work and power users learned to type faster than they could click. The bar treats navigation as intent fulfillment rather than list scanning. Linear proved the model could work outside developer tools and the pattern spread in under four years.

It is not a search box with autocomplete. It is not a command palette that only links to pages like an upgraded site map. The common confusion is teams shipping something they label a command bar when it is really just fuzzy search over their old sidebar items. That version still forces you to think in their taxonomy. A real command bar parses verbs like assign, create, or refactor then does the thing immediately. It uses recent context so the first result is rarely wrong.

Linear set the standard in 2021. Before Linear most B2B apps still shipped the 2015 sidebar uniform. After Linear every serious product team asked why their dashboard needed a fat left rail at all. Their command bar ranks the issue you looked at ninety seconds ago at the top even if you type only three characters. Raycast took it to the OS level in 2022. Arc browser made the entire web feel like one command bar. Vercel followed in 2024 and collapsed their project switcher into the same surface. Each example shows the same rhyme. The bar becomes the spine. The canvas gets the pixels.

The craft skill nobody discusses is ranking. A sloppy command bar that surfaces irrelevant junk feels slower than the sidebar it replaced. A great one feels like the app read your mind and already started the task. That single difference decides whether users adopt the shortcut on day two or ignore it forever. The best teams treat the ranking model as core product work not an afterthought.

Use a command bar when your users return daily and your product has far more actions than top-level nouns. It earns its keep inside Linear, Cursor, Raycast, and Vercel where speed compounds. Skip it for consumer apps where new users arrive cold every week or for admin panels with thirty unrelated sections that power users jump between by sight. The tradeoff is steep first-run discoverability against lifetime efficiency. Solve the onboarding with an explicit hint or you will flinch and reinstall the sidebar out of fear.

The command bar decoupled discoverability from persistent chrome for the first time. Teams no longer had permission to overload the left rail with twelve things nobody clicks. That decoupling alone cleaned up years of accumulated product debt in a single redesign cycle.

Teams that ship a strong command bar stop designing lists and start designing parsers. The role merges the old navigation designer with the search relevance owner. One person owns the entire experience instead of ten PMs adding their pet link to the rail.

By 2026 the expectation flipped. New designers get asked why their mockups still show a 240-pixel sidebar instead of a clean canvas and a visible cmd-K hint. The bar is now the default. Anything else reads as legacy.

The command bar rewards restraint and punishes indecision. Get the ranking right and the entire product feels telepathic. Get it wrong and users bounce before they ever learn the shortcut.
