Neumorphism
Neumorphism is the short lived 2020 trend that extruded soft plastic like surfaces using inset and outset shadows but delivered zero semantic meaning or accessibility. It existed as a reaction to flat design fatigue. Designers wanted something tactile again. The execution never survived contact with real products or real users.
It is not modern skeuomorphism. Neumorphism copied the aesthetic of soft materials without the physics. Modern skeuomorphism copies the physics. Contact shadows, directional light, refraction. Those signals mean something. Neumorphism produced surfaces that looked neither elevated nor flat. Users could not tell buttons from decoration.
The common failure modes were immediate. Low contrast failed WCAG on both light and dark themes. Hit targets blended into the background. The soft glow shadows created halation that made text hard to read. Corporate dashboards dressed in Figma soft shadows looked like toy interfaces. The trend collapsed inside 18 months.
Dribbble exploded with neumorphic login screens in 2020. Every shot featured a soft extruded card with a toggle that appeared pressed into the surface. In production those toggles had 2.1 to 1 contrast. Screen readers announced nothing useful about state. Developers spent weeks tuning shadows that still looked wrong on customer laptops with different gamma settings.
Compare that to visionOS cards in 2026. Those use stacked shadows with clear contact edges, ambient softness, and directional light. Elevation is obvious. Interactive states use inset shadows that actually depress. The difference is physics versus decoration.
Use neumorphism never. It failed every practical test. The look without the function created interfaces that felt mushy and inaccessible. Modern teams reach for proper shadow stacks and specular highlights instead. Those tools scale across platforms and pass contrast checks.
The only reason to study neumorphism today is as a cautionary tale. It showed what happens when designers prioritize a Dribbble aesthetic over real material logic and accessibility requirements. The trend died because it deserved to die.
If your product needs depth use the seven craft moves from current skeuomorphism instead. Ground every decision in how light actually behaves. Test every surface against real users on real devices. The extra effort pays off in interfaces that feel solid instead of soft and vague.
Neumorphism borrowed the look of a material. Modern skeuomorphism borrows the physics. The physics is what lasts.

Skeuomorphism is the design approach that copies real world material physics so pixels feel like physical objects users already know how to use.
Glassmorphism
Glassmorphism is the frosted translucent UI style that dominated 2021-2023 interfaces with blurred backgrounds, low-opacity panels, and bright borders but now serves as a dated marker for template-driven AI startup sites.
